The last 24 hours of the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout were a whirlwind for Reef McIntosh. After securing the lead by the end of day two of the Backdoor Shootout, the Pipeline mainstay had been anxiously watching, hiding in recluse, politicking with contest officials and competitors, and most importantly, charging Pipe…all while trying not to celebrate too soon.
“It’s an experience I’ve never felt before,” Reef recalled of his nail-biting afternoon. “It sucked watching. I don’t know how Slater, Andy and guys who’ve won out here do it. I was so stressed out that I had to have a beer to calm me down.”
Check out the footage below from one of the most unique surf contests, the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout.
The 2012 Da Hui Backdoor Shootout kicked off last weekend in absolutely stellar conditions at the famed Banzai Pipeline. A team and individual based event, the Shootout is a grass-roots contest that is unlike any of the others—no live Web cast, no press releases, no jerseys, and no ASP sanctioning. It’s straight balls out charging at surfing’s ultimate arena. With two days completed and one remaining, Reef McIntosh leads the individual field while Volcom is ahead in the team portion of the event. Word has it that today may be the next day the Shootout runs, stay tuned!
